The night of the 2025 Oscars has given us memorable moments, but also episodes destined to cause discussion. One of these saw Adrien Brody as the protagonist, winner of the award for Best Actor for his performance in The Brutalist. Before giving his acceptance speech, the actor made a gesture that left the audience perplexed: he spat the chewing gum in his hand and threw it to his partner, Georgina Chapman, before heading towards the stage.

Adrien Brody at the 2025 Oscars: a long speech, between inspiration and controversy

After beating Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice), Brody began his speech with words of gratitude for his career and for the opportunity to play significant roles.

“Acting is a fragile profession. It seems glamorous, and sometimes it is, but I have learned that everything can vanish in an instant. For this I am incredibly grateful to be here, once again.” Towards the end of his long speech, however, the Academy began to play music to signal the conclusion. Brody, visibly annoyed, interrupted the ceremony by asking for the music to stop: “I am wrapping up, please turn off the music. I have done this before. It is not my first rodeo, but I will be brief.”

Brody then concluded his speech with a powerful message about historical memory and its role in cinema: “I am here once again to represent the lingering traumas of war and systematic oppression. I pray for a healthier, happier, more inclusive world.” Although his message was profound and touching, the way he handled the situation raised criticism. His gesture with the chewing gum was considered disrespectful by many, while his attempt to silence the Academy’s music divided the audience between those who appreciated his determination and those who considered him arrogant.

21 years after his first win for The Pianist, Brody has confirmed himself as a talented actor, but also a figure capable of generating controversy. The 2025 Oscars will be remembered not only for Anora’s triumph, but also for his much-discussed speech.
