The director has highlighted that the success of the film Alien: Romulus was also determined by the choice to re-propose iconic elements of the saga. Fede Álvarez has confirmed that he is already working on the script for a possible sequel to Alien: Romulus. The film, released in 2024, achieved significant success at the box office, exceeding 350 million dollars globally. This result has fueled speculation about a new chapter in the saga.
During a special IMAX screening organized by Collider to celebrate the film's Oscar nomination in the Best Visual Effects category, Álvarez participated in a question and answer session with VFX Supervisor Eric Barbra and VFX Supervisor of Wētā FX Dan Macarin. On this occasion, the director revealed that he was already writing the script and that the sequel would probably be his next film project. Although Álvarez did not provide specific details about when production would begin, he expressed hope that the film Alien: Romulus 2 will be shot this year.
He also confirmed that there is a shared plan with 20th Century Studios to move the project forward. After the first film's success, the director said he took a break before starting work on a possible continuation of the story. At the end of Alien: Romulus, the characters of Rain Carradine, played by Cailee Spaney, and the android Andy, played by David Jonsson, are the only survivors of the events on the Romulus space station.
Álvarez hinted at the possibility of exploring new aspects of the saga's narrative universe, referring to elements introduced in previous installments, including Alien and Prometheus. The director emphasized that the success of the film Alien: Romulus was also determined by the choice to reintroduce iconic elements of the saga, satisfying the expectations of the public. For the sequel, the intention is to explore new directions, further expanding the narrative universe of the series.
