True Detective, the HBO series whose fourth season recently ended, has also been renewed for a fifth season. Issa López, the creator of “True Detective: Night Country,” will direct the fifth season thanks to a deal with the network that has just been made official. According to data released by HBO, the fourth season totaled 12.7 million viewers, and the final episode on February 18 attracted over 3.2 million viewers on HBO and Max, an increase of 57% compared to the first episode of January.
“From conception to release, 'Night Country' was the greatest collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” said López. HBO completely trusted my vision and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of 'True Detective' with Casey, Francesca, and the entire team is a dream come true. I can't wait to go back.”
“Issa Lopez is that rare and unique talent who speaks directly to the creative spirit of HBO,” added Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming and head of HBO drama series and films. She directed “True Detective: Night Country” from start to finish, never wavering from her laudable vision and inspiring us with her resilience both on the written page and behind the camera. In addition to Jodie and Kali's flawless performances, she has made this chapter of the franchise a huge success and we are so lucky to have her as part of our family."
The fourth season also featured Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, and John Hawkes in the cast. Guest stars included Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, and Joel D. Montgrand. At the moment the two stars of the fourth season are not linked in any way to the new episodes but, since it is an anthology series, it is difficult to hypothesize that they will return. Issa López was the screenwriter, executive producer, and showrunner of “Night Country”, while Jodie Foster was the executive producer as well as the protagonist (among the executive producers were also Barry Jenkins, the historic creator Nic Pizzolatto, Mari Jo Winkler, and, directly from the first season, actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and director Cary Joji Fukunaga)
