Sony Pictures presents the trailer and poster for Gran Turismo, the film directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9) starring David Harbor (Stranger Things, Hellboy) and Orlando Bloom (Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean). The film, inspired by the famous PlayStation racing game, is inspired by the true story of a young player, Jann Mardenborough, who, by winning a series of competitive video game races, manages to become a real professional driver. The screenplay is written by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin. In the cast of the live-action film we also find Archie Madekwe (Les Miserables) in the title role, Darren Barnet (Never Have I Ever…), Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond – Blood Diamonds), and Geri Halliwell-Horner (Spice Girls – The film ).

Gran Turismo hits theaters September 20, produced by Sony Pictures and distributed by Eagle Pictures

The official synopsis of the film reveals that: “Inspired by a true story, the film tells the fulfillment of the dream of Jann Mardenborough, a teenage Gran Turismo player, who thanks to his gaming skills wins a series of Nissan competitions to become a professional driver.”

An unusual technology was used for the film, as explained by director Blomkamp on stage at CES last January. The director described working with various Sony cameras and sensors which allowed them to obtain unusual POVs, not normally obtainable within the narrow confines of a Formula 1 car, all intended to recreate some of the perspectives with which players will be familiar.

The video game franchise was started in 1997 by developer Polyphony Digital, led by Kazunori Yamauchi. The games have an emphasis on realism, with simulations that mirror the real-life appearance and performance of vehicles. The franchise to date has amassed 14 releases and its sales exceed 80 million. It is the best-selling franchise for the PlayStation brand.
